Characteristics of the multistage high-pressure reciprocating compressor, which is expected to obtain outlet pressure over 30 Mpa, have been studied. Multistage reciprocating compressors can get a high pressure with high efficiency because cylinders are arranged in series. Accordingly, they are widely used in many industries, and improvement in their performance has been strongly demanded recently. In order to increase gas flow rate, improving volumetric efficiency is the most important factor. For improvement of volumetric efficiency, the performance characteristics are comprehensively studied by the numerical simulations and the experiments. Pressure pulsation, valve dynamic behaviors and flow rate have been measured in the experiment. Using a numerical simulation code of STAR-CD, which assumed three dimensional, compressible and unsteady flow, the dynamic phenomena of compressor parts has been demonstrated. Consequently, parameters that need for improvement of flows in the compressor have been discussed.
