Characteristics of the multistage high-pressure reciprocating compressor, which is expected to obtainoutlet pressure over 30 Mpa, have been studied. Multistage reciprocating compressors can get a highpressure with high efficiency because cylinders are arranged in series. Accordingly, they are widelyused in many industries, and improvement in their performance has been strongly demanded recently.In order to increase gas flow rate, improving volumetric efficiency is the most important factor. Forimprovement of volumetric efficiency, the performance characteristics are comprehensively studied by thenumerical simulations and the experiments. Pressure pulsation, valve dynamic behaviors and flow ratehave been measured in the experiment. Using a numerical simulation code of STAR-CD, whichassumed three dimensional, compressible and unsteady flow, the dynamic phenomena of compressor partshas been demonstrated. Consequently, parameters that need for improvement of flows in the compressorhave been discussed.
