In this study, a continuous enzymatic bioprocess for phenol polymerization using entrapped soybean peroxidase (SBP) enzymes in the presence of hydrogen peroxide is investigated. The LSCFB system offers a great advantage over the conventional packed bed bioreactors and fluidized bed bioreactors for the described bioremediation process. During the enzymatic reaction, phenols are polymerized into polymeric materials by entrapped SBP enzymes. These polymeric materials deposit on the surface of the peroxidase particle and could restrict any further enzyme-phenol reaction. In order to overcome this deactivation, a continuous regeneration of peroxidase particles is performed in the LSCFB. A 5% ethanol solution was applied as a regeneration solution for peroxidase particles. Due to the rapid reaction time, the riser was selected as a reaction vessel and due to the slower regeneration time, the downcomer was selected as a regeneration vessel.
