COMPARING IN SITU AND SEAWIFS DERIVED CHLOROPHYLL-A FOR STATION 27*

Station 27 in situ fluorescence and SeaWiFS chlorophyll-a (chl-a) data for 2001 and 2002 were examined. Station 27 is a fixed oceanographic station located near St. John’s, NL and is monitored by the Department of Fisheries and Ocean’s Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program. Three sample windows were created from the SeaWiFS images to evaluate if the field and image data were comparable and to assess the effect of increasing the image-sampling window on the chl-a estimates. Regressions between in situ and remotely sensed data revealed that for chl-a concentrations of less than 2.5 mg/m m3, there was no correlation between the in situ data and the image. However, a high correlation was observed with the 2002 dataset that included chl-a concentrations of up to 11 mg/m , m3. It was also determined that changing the size of the sample windows had little effect on the chl-a estimates.
