Waste aluminum dross is a major waste in the aluminum scrap smelters, and some metallic aluminum remains in the waste dross. In this study, waste aluminum dross was leached with sodium hydroxide solution to extract the remained aluminum into the solution, and aluminum hydroxide precipitate was recovered from the leached solution. The residue of dross in the leaching step was processed for recycling it in the ceramic materials. The leached residue was washed, dried and roasted. Most metallic components in the dross were changed into oxides through the processing. The roasted dross could be made into alumina ceramic raw materials. The developed process was scaled up, and a pilot plant was constructed and tested to demonstrate the commercial application of the technology. One thousand tons of waste aluminum dross could be processed annually in the pilot plant. From the results of the test run, it was confirmed that the developed technology could be used for commercialization.
