Protective Effects of Local Plants on Cisplatin-induced Reproductive Toxicity in Rats

Cisplatin (CIS) is a commonly used anticancer drug that is known for its reproductive toxicity side-effects. It is induces damage to testis and spermatogenesis and causes reproductive dysfunctions both in experimental animals and in humans. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the protective effect of water extracts of selected plants (Families: Malvaceae and Zingiberaceae) on the CIS-induced biochemical changes and histopathological damages of rat testis. A single dose (10 mg/ kg b.wt.) of CIS-induced reproductive toxicity in male Wistar rats as manifested in the relative weight loss of testis and epididymis and the decrease of the sperm count and motility. Pathologic examinations revealed degenerations of testicular tubules and spermatocyte germ cells. This investigation demonstrates for the first time the protective effects of the tested extracts against the CIS-induced reproductive toxicity.
