Trials have shown that underground coal gasification (UCG) can be conducted in deep seams to produce a high-pressure syngas of medium calorific value. The process is controllable and the resultant gas could be used in combined cycle power generation, for hydrogen production or conversion to chemicals. UCG undertaken in deep seams reduces the potential environmental impact and the resultant high pressure of the product gas facilitates CO_2 capture. Preliminary economic studies indicate that UCG with CO_2 capture and storage (CCS) is of similar cost to competing fossil fuel options with CCS.
