If you want to burn fossil fuels to generate energy and capture the CO_2 in a concentrated form undiluted by nitrogen in the air, you need either: 1. To remove the nitrogen from the air before combustion, or 2. Some way of burning the fuel without air, or 3. Both of the above. This contribution concentrates on the second and third of these. Methane precombustion produces hydrogen, but the cheapest process recovers only 45% of the CO_2. Higher hydrocarbons cost more to precombust. Coal may yet come into its own.
