The safety assessment methodology presented here - the scenario approach - is dedicated to the long-term safety performance of underground CO_2 storage. The safety assessment starts with the definition of the assessment basis. It constrains the assessment by determination of the safety criteria, the definition of the storage concept and the description of the setting of the storage facility. The scenario methodology proper consists of three main parts, which are scenario analysis, model development and consequence analysis. The scenario analysis focuses on performing a comprehensive inventory of risk factors (Features, Events and Processes or FEPs) and subsequent selection of the most critical factors that are grouped into discrete CO_2 leakage scenarios. Quantitative physico-mathematical models need to be developed that enable a quantitative safety assessment of the scenarios in the consequence analysis.
