A 3km optical link operating at 635 nm has been set up across Galway cityto measure the effect of atmospheric turbulence on beam propagation and todemonstrate the effect of phase compensation with an adaptive optics sys-tem. In this paper we use a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor to measure thestrength of the atmospheric turbulence along the propagation path in terms ofthe angle-of-arrival fluctuations and try to detect the presence of branch pointsfrom the wavefront sensor slope data using the branch point potential methodproposed by Wild and Le Bigot.1
