In utilities and other industries Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Operational systems (SCADA/DMS/EMS), and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS/EAM) require the same type of information, especially with respect to assets/equipment related information for operational and planning purpose. Utilities are increasingly utilizing CMMS and GIS in addition to the operational systems to optimize the overall utility performance, i.e. maximum utilization of the assets. A major challenge for the utility is to keep all these data intensive systems updated with reliable data. Several attempts has been made in the past to create a single asset register where all data is stored, leading to one giant database, very complex to maintain and hence cumbersome to work with. ABB has in cooperation with partners and end-customers initiated a development program aimed at targeting the challenge of how to create an integrated utility - easy to maintain. This paper will present some of the resulting technology/solutions from this pioneering program. The technology development is separated into two phases: 1. Cross Application Navigation - seamless navigation between systems 2. Virtual Asset Register - asset synchronisation The cross application navigation technology enables the users to seamless navigate between their systems - in a context - from the native system GUIs. The virtual asset register enables functionality for keeping the asset data in the respective systems consistent and up-to-date without creating a giant database. Data consistency between all systems is achieved by data modeling according to the Common Information Model (CIM) standard, which defines the basic set of CIM packages that provide a logical view of the physical aspects of the energy management system information. Part IEC 61970-302 defines the financial and energy scheduling logical view; Part IEC 61970-303 defines the SCADA logical view. The CIM is an abstract model that represents all the major objects that are typically needed to model the operational aspects of an electricity utility enterprise.
