August 2005: Fiftieth Anniversary of the First United Nation's 'Geneva Conference'

Introduction: The first, large scale practical application of nuclear energy was not of peaceful nature but aimed at the production of nuclear weapons. The first test of such a weapon took place on July 16, 1945 in New Mexico, United States (US). Almost one month later, on August 6 and August 9, 1945 nuclear bombs were dropped on Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki by US's airplanes. The degree of destruction of buildings and the number of (mostly civilian) casualties through death and injuries revealed an unprecedented military capability of such bombs. This "success" stimulated further development and testing of these and other types of nuclear weapons by US and some other countries.
