To develop adsorbent materials that can be used for ~99Mo/~99mTc generators, a sol-gel processing scheme is adopted. In this study, silica materials functionalized with zirconyl chloride and zirconyl sulfate are developed by this process and characterized for the physico-chemical properties. The developed materials have enough molybdenum uptake capacities (>200 mg/g) with which the production of ~99Mo/~99mTc generators by using ~99Mo from the neutron irradiation of an enriched ~98Mo as the source is possible. Demonstration studies have been undertaken for the loading efficiency of the molybdenum and the tech-netium elution in a column. From this demonstration study, experimental results show that the elution efficiency of the column is more than 80 %, and the leaching of ~99Mo in the eluted solution is not detected within the detection limit of the measuring instrument.
