Developments in e-commerce in Shiprepair and Conversion

Shiprepair is a global business, in which complex repair work is managed and completed in very short time-scales. Increasing competition dictates the need for ship owners, shiprepair companies, their suppliers and sub-contractors to collaborate closely. Determining the workscope, resource requirements and schedules for the repair work must be carried out rapidly by the collaborators often in different locations. This paper outlines the outcomes of a EU supported project INTERMAR, (Intelligent Supply Chain Management for the Extended Maritime Enterprise). An e-commerce software system has been developed which is specific to shiprepair requirements. The project completed a detailed analysis of the operations and communication needs of the partner shipyards, and has subsequently developed software. The software, based on a commercial database has been installed and implemented by the partners.
