摘要

The main purpose of the present study is to investigate the suitability of magnetic susceptibility as a proxy method for the characterization of geological formations. Magnetic minerals present in soils may be either inherited due to physical processes (lithogenic origin or pedogenesis) or may stem from anthropogenic activities. The interest of this work is focusing on the study of the magnetic susceptibility of non polluted sediments. Sediments were collected from various areas of Greece with different geological conditions and further analyzed in order to determine their magnetic susceptibility. Additionally the variation of the magnetic susceptibility in a water borehole has been measured. The results of the present work support the use of magnetic susceptibility as a tool for soil characterization and prove that background susceptibility must be determined prior the investigation of an area using magnetic properties as a pollution monitoring tool.
