Study upon the Quality of Some Structural Adhesives Based on Mixed Furan Resin with Furfurilyc Alcohol

The main objective of this paper was to determine the quality of some adhesive compositions purposed to be used for load-bearing timber structures at environmental temperature. As a binding an equal weight proportions of classical URELIT R type urea resin and a mixed furan resin with furfurylic alcohol of FC-2 URELIT type, as well as the last one were used. For all the studied adhesive compositions the pressing time of 4 hours led to some higher medium shearing forces that in the case of the pressing time of 2 hours. Within the same context, comparing to the reference sample, the achieved adhesive consumption are reduced with up to 45% when using the furan resin of FC-2 URELIT and with ca. 35% in the case of mixed furan resin with furfurylic alcohol of FC-2 URELIT type in equal weight proportions with ureic resin of R URELIT type. The medium shearing forces determined by longitudinal tensile stress for adhesive composition based on furan resin with furfurylic alcohol of FC-2 URELIT type in equal weight proportions with URELIT R type urea resin and the composition based only on furan resin with furfurylic alcohol of FC-2 URELIT type were higher compared to the adhesive composition based only on classical URELIT R urea resin type. According to SR EN 301:1999 regarding to the minimum value of the medium shearing forces by longitudinal tensile stress for the adhesives used for load-bearing timber structures, it was observed that the adhesive compositions with furan resin with furfurylic alcohol FC-2 URELIT type were included in Ist class of quality.
