Numerical Study of Controlling Multistability by Periodic Pump Modulation in an Erbium-Doped Fiber Laser

An erbium-doped fiber laser with driving pump modulation displays complex dynamics showing coexistence of attractors. Using a novel laser equation model we simulate experiments for controlling multistability in this laser and obtain good agreement with experimental results. We construct bifurcation diagrams of the laser peak intensity with respect to the driving and control modulation frequencies and amplitudes. We demonstrate with the basins of attraction of coexistent three periodic attractors that additional weak and slow harmonic modulation of the diode pump current can control the number of coexisting stable periodic orbits in the laser.
