Lessons from an Overlooked Pioneer: Observations Applied to Planting Design

To help provide some guidance to planting design approaches today this article considers the work of educator Frank A. Waugh (1869-1943). From a study of his publications Waugh's perspective on planting design can be garnered. Waugh with his astute observations and easy communication style was a pioneer in the emerging field of landscape architecture evolving out of a practice of landscape gardening at the turn of the 20th century. Particularly his later writing about plants may help guide designers today toward a more thoughtful practice of planting design.
