In the paper an analysis of the influence of shot peening on structure and mechanical properties of the 5754 aluminium alloy (PA11) welded joints using the TIG method are presented. Emission spectroscopy showed that during shot peening a transfer of microparticles coming from stainless shot (Fe-Ni-Cr) into the surface layer down to the depth of 70 - 100 μm. Shot peening of a surface layer caused an increase in yield point and Young's modulus of 20% and 30%, respectively. The analysis of microfractography after tensile tests of the 5754 aluminium alloy with butt joints strengthened by shot peening showed a lamination of upper layer down to 150 μm.
