A PROPOSAL OF THE COMPREHENSIVE RISK REDUCTION METHOD FOR HAZARDOUS POINT NEARBY OPERATION - THE DEVELOPMENT OF SAFETY SYSTEM FOR WOOD PROCESSING MACHINES

The hazardous point nearby operation means that the operator approaches to the machine without stopping hazardous moving parts, such as the operation of preparing, trouble shooting, maintenance, cleaning, adjustment, or process confirmation. A comprehensive risk reduction method is required because about 40% of fatal accidents are caused by such operations. New concepts of the risk management division, the accident prevention division and the supporting protective device are proposed for that purpose. The typical example of hazardous point nearby operation is the wood cutting process. The authors propose a new safety system. This system has following features. It has two pieces of movable protective covers around the circular saw. These covers can be permitted to move only when the existence of operator's fingers in the safety zone is confirmed.
