ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION ON AUTOMATIC REVOLVING DOORS

An 18-month-old boy died on March 4th, 2004 in an automatic revolving door at Cologne Airport. The accident happened because the child was pulled in between the outside part of the door and the revolving inside door wing. The BGIA investigated a representative sample of 14 revolving doors with two, three and four wings under field conditions. The results showed that persons in need of special protection, i.e. children, handicapped or old persons, generally run a particular risk of getting injured when using such doors. Consequently, for twelve out of fourteen doors shutdown had to be recommended. Based on the fundamental requirements of the EU Machinery Directive, the BGIA has recently issued a comprehensive list of protective measures for automatic revolving doors.
