The IRMCK203 is a new integrated circuit device designed as a single-chip solution for complete closed-loop current control and velocity control for sensorless PMSM drive systems. Unlike traditional microcontrollers or DSPs, the IRMCK203 does not require any programming effort to complete complex algorithm development. All control algorithms in the IRMCK203 are implemented by the Motion Control Engine TM (MCE) dedicated hardware logic. It has a wide range of application coverage through its flexible configuration ability. Rich motion peripherals, analog and digital I/O can also be configured in the IC. Host communication logic contains an Asynchronous Communication Interface for RS232C communication, a fast slave SPI interface and an 8-bit universal Parallel Interface. The IC comes in a compact 80-pin plastic QFP package and enables easy assembly of the user's printed circuit board. Combined with International Rectifier's high voltage gate driver and current sensing IC, the user can implement a complete sensorless control with minimal component count and design effort. This paper introduces a new powerful toolset for rapid prototyping of digital motor drives through an air conditioner application example. Key technologies and merits are discussed based on the features IRMCK203 provides.
