The subject of this paper is the design of a small-size andlow-cost antenna to be used in Ultra Wideband (UWB)short-range radar devices operating in the 5 GHz band. Theantenna is based on a square array of four patch antennasdesigned to offer good matching on a 500 MHz bandwidtharound a center frequency of 5.6 GHz. The proposed an-tenna design is discussed, giving details on the prototyperealization. Simulations results are presented and com-pared with measurements of return loss and antenna pat-tern. Simulation analysis is carried out on the full FCCUWB band, showing fair matching on a bandwidth in ex-cess than 4 GHz and possibility for further efficiency en-hancements.
