The combined use of inert materials and live plants, needs a clarification about terminology and function of the different materials and at the same time the establishment of common design standard criteria. For banks/slopes protection and or for their stabilization/retaining the standard engineering design criteria must be used and have to be extended to the different bioengineering solutions. The "minimum level of energy concept have to be used in order to find the best solution moving from the simplest to the most sophisticated one, but under the same design accurancy and global safety coefficient. The performances of the different solutions, due to the combination with plants have to be continuosly updated and consequently the to day available data can change according to the progress of the experience. This paper has to be considered not a technical manual, but a general and hypothetical correct guideline to approach from the widest multidsciplinary point of view the use of bioengineering technics.
