Internationally, women are greatly underrepresented in physics and in other technical fields for which physics knowledge is an essential prerequisite. Yet some women who defied the odds and pursued their intellectual passion for physics have made extraordinary contributions to the field and to society. Forty such women and their achievements are featured in the book Out of the Shadows: Contributions of Twentieth-Century Women to Physics, edited by Nina Byers and Gary Williams and published by Cambridge University Press in 2006.
