The mechanical properties of thermoplastics reinforced with natural fibres, such as flax and hemp, critically depend on structural factors including their inherent strength and stiffness, interfacial bonding to the host matrix, and their preferred orientation. This paper will consider these and related aspects, such as pre-treatment and thermal stability of the fibre, the influence of processing method and developments towards using higher modulus micro- and nano-scale fibres.
