Five previous presentations before the AWPA (Blessing and Rouse, 2002; Rouse, 1988; Rouse, 1997; Rouse and Pyrih, 1990; Thomasser and Rouse, 1999) have developed the concept of in-sitit reduction of hexavalent chromium in contaminated ground water. While these approaches have proven environmentally protective and cost effective, in some cases such active approaches may not be appropriate. Rather, it may be appropriate to limit the spread of chromium contamination by formation of permeable reactive barriers. Recent tests and field applications have demonstrated the ability to form geochemical reactive barriers, capable of long-term reduction of hexavalent chromium, by the bore-hole placement of reductants.
