The city of Christchurch is situated on the coastal edge of the Canterbury Plains in the South Island of New Zealand. It has a significant wintertime air pollution problem that is dominated by smoke generated by domestic fires burning coal and wood on cold nights. The emissions consist mostly of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) that represents about 80-90% of the total PM. A key aim of this research is to understand variations in PM_10 and PM_2.5 concentrations and their ratios under different patterns of local meteorology using input emissions split into different groups of chemical compounds (scenarios) that contribute to the particulate load for the "Total" emissions group. The influence of two different planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes on predicted pollution concentrations output was also investigated.
