Grain dust has long been known to be an occupational hazard. The first formal medical description of the health effects associated with grain dust exposure was made in 1713. Since then, there have been numerous scientific studies undertaken to further document and, in some cases, even quantify such effects. This paper attempts to briefly summarize these studies and highlight the importance of medical surveillance and exposure minimization for employees and employers in the grain industry.
