Considerable evidence has been compiled to demonstrate that high strength, sour service (HSSS) grades of casing (C-100, C-105 and C-110) can be consistently produced if the proper metallurgical attributes are controlled and attained. The use of modem process control systems can aid in this goal. As the industry pushes the capabilities of the new steels to higher performance limits it becomes even more important to carefully design a tubular chemistries that is tailored to the specific heat treating system used. The drilling and materials engineers can successfully utilize higher strength sour service (HSSS) grades when the environment and the SSC resistance of the material are well understood.
