MATERIALS SELECTION AND CORROSION ISSUES ON AN OFFSHORE PRODUCING PLATFORM

Offshore producing platforms are comparatively expensive to construct and maintain, as compared to similar onshore facilities. Combining this with the criticality of ensuring the high availability materials of construction are normally relatively exotic. This paper reviews a number of corrosion issues and failures associated with the start up and production of an offshore platform in the Arabian Gulf. Such failures include stress corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion, atmospheric corrosion, and pitting; relating to stainless steels, nickel based austenitic alloys, nickel/copper alloys and carbon steel.
