In a typical generating plant, the Unit Auxiliary Transformer (UAT) feeds the motor bus (refer to Figure 1). During the generator unit start-up/shut down sequence, or any fault on generator side, the Alternative Source Transformer (AST) provides power to the motor bus. This practice of transferring the motor bus to the alternate source as fast and as secure as possible by keeping the dead time to a minimum is called the "Automatic Bus Transfer Scheme"(ATS).
