Launch vehicles ensure a proper level of safety for population and ground objects along the flight track with the help of flight safety system (FSS) that terminates flight in case of LV failure. There are different FSS architectures, however there's always a risk of erratic initiation of a flight termination command if a vehicle suffers from a short-duration, self-restoring failure. Although the probability of such event is extremely low, the algorithm of FSS should be designed with the intent to minimize the probability of erroneous flight termination. In order to reduce the probability of erroneous LV flight termination it is proposed to introduce a delay between the indication of a termination criterion and termination command issuance. The delay allows double-checking of LV flight parameters and determining if real failure is the case. The delay duration selection is an optimization problem. Reduced delay results in reduced risks for population and ground objects along the flight track, when increase of the delay decreases the probability of making an erroneous decision on LV failure and thus increases probability of launch mission success. The work describes solution of the defined optimization problem and gives recommendation on the delay value.
