The Science of Sports Medicine

Participation in sports and exercise has increased over the past decade secondary to the growing emphasis in society on health and fitness. Sports medicine is a collaboration of both surgical and nonsurgical subspecialties that deal with health care issues affecting athletes of all levels. Focus has expanded from the young athlete to include all people, including the aging "baby-boomer" population in the United States. Numerous medical specialty societies and publications have added sections dealing with sports medicine that focus on prevention, physiology, performance, treatment, prognosis, and research. As the field advances, science-based management paradigms are evolving. This paper reviews new scientific studies, discoveries, and issues that are driving management of the patient participating in athletic activities.
