Development of a Non-armored Toneable 432-Fiber Cable for Installation in 1-inch Ducts

A newly developed toneable cable is a hybrid design combining some of the advantages of dielectric and armored designs. The toneable cable uses steel wire strength elements, without the normally associated steel armor. This allows for a smaller cable diameter while maintaining an electrically conductive metal path in the cable. This conductive path allows for toning, locating and monitoring the cable. Toning puts an electric signal on the cable, which allows the cable to be located. A 432-fiber toneable cable capable of being installed in a 1-inch (25.4 mm) duct was developed and tested. The cable passed industry standard testing, including lightning testing, and the cable was found to have good handling properties.
