Licensed Medications, 'Generic' Medications, Compounding, and Nutraceuticals—What Has Been Scientifically Validated, Where Do We Encounter Scientific Mistruth, and Where Are We Legally?

This report was encouraged by the American Association of Equine Practitioners' Ethics Committee, who perceived a need to clarify questions such as what are Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-licensed products and how they are scientifically validatedcompared with illegal medications (particularly some medications being erroneously represented as generics). This report will also address current knowledge of efficacy of various nutraceuticals and the legal definitions of an approved drug, a generic drug, a device, and a feed additive.
