Fiber reinforced phenolic resin composite material is an important kind of fire safe one for air interior structure. Phenolic resin manufactured from natural compound, cashew nut shell liquid, becomes less brittle than common phenol formaldehyde resin. In this paper, cashew nut shell liquid modified phenolic resin was further toughened by high performance thermoplastics, polyaryletherketone with cardo (PEK-C). The processing characteristics and formulation of the blended resin were optimized by experimental design. The effect of content, end group structure and molecular weight of thermoplastics PEK-C on properties of glass fiber reinforced toughened resin composite was also investigated. The morphology of fracture surface was observed and analysed with the help of scanning electron microscope. The impact strength, flexural strength of toughened resin, and interlaminar fracture toughness GIC of its composites were increased from 1.3 KJ/m{sup}2 to 4.25 KJ/m{sup}2, 35.9 MPa to 82.2 MPa, and 267 J/m{sup}2 to 883 J/m{sup}2 respectively; and its heat resistance and other properties were not decreased. A unique dual phase microstructure was formed, in which the continuous net-shaped phase was made from thermoplastic resin and thermosetting resin, the sphere-shaped particles of thermosetting resin costituted the discontinuous phase.
