Suppression of Strong Interference in Broadband Communications via Filter Banks

This paper describes a novel time-domain method of effectively suppressing strong synchronous and asynchronous interference in broadband communications such as OFDM. The method requires knowledge only of the training symbols for the desired user and does not require any knowledge about the interfering signals. The method uses filter banks, which enable the design of computationally efficient time-domain Space-Time (ST) combiners that suppress the interference. The space-time combiners are applied to overlapping segments of the signal bandwidth where each segment is relatively narrowband, which makes the computation of the space-time filters practical. Simulation results show that, unlike existing methods, the filter-bank approach is very effective at suppressing strong interference (e.g., 41 Mbps was achieved for a C/I of -10 dB with a 19.0 MHz bandwidth).
