To meet the practical demand of a sample Permanent Magnet Brushless DC Motor (PMBDCM) drive, a detailed mathematical analysis of PMBDCM allowing for damping windings is presented in this paper, and an applicable model of PMBDCM is developed under Matlab/Simulink for the simulation drive system. The model of PMBDCM is built up with S-function, and the other components of simulation system are all made of the standard library model of Matlab/Simulink. Through the simulation system, some key parameters are determined and optimized for the sample drive system. The results of experiment on the sample drive system, which adopted the parameters given by the simulation system, have shown the mathematical analysis of PMBDCM is rational and the modeling approach for the drive system is feasible. The method presented in this paper is general and simple, and it gives a feasible approach to investigate the detail behaviors of PMBDCM.
