LEVERAGING THE AIR FORCE ENTERPRISE APPROACH TO TIME SYNCHRONIZATION: A PROPOSAL

Net-centric warfare requires an unprecedented level of integration. Time synchronization is a key driver for that integration. The U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO) provides PTTI capability for the Department of Defense (DoD). To date, we do not have a comprehensive method for distributing time from the USNO to systems with varying precision and accuracy requirements. The Air Force, as part of its Common Integrated Infrastructure initiative, has taken on this problem. The result is an Air Force Enterprise Time architecture that encompasses the USNO provided delivery mechanisms and provides the framework for delivery of pedigreed time to end systems. We offer the Air Force approach to achieving enterprise time delivery as a starting point for the DoD.
