Water is a life sustaining material and critical for manned space travel. In most scenarios of long-duration flight or permanent Lunar or Mars bases, an effective Water Recovery System is a critical component of Advanced Life Support technology (Chiaramonte and Joshi 2004). Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) is considered a prospective technology for water reuse during long term space missions. The objectives of this research are: 1) evaluate biological treatment of Early Planetary Base Wastewater (EPBW) by using MBR technology focusing on COD removal and nitrification; and 2) investigate the impact of MBR loading patterns on sludge properties and membrane filtration.
