Cyanobacteria are prokaryotic, single celled, widespread organisms that grow (a) planktonically in water or (b) benthically on surfaces in water bodies, and (c) on moist terrestrial surfaces. Many species form filaments or colonies, sometimes upto 1 or 2 mm in diameter. Benthic species may form dense mats. Mass aggregations of cyanobacteria have earned the collective term "water blooms". Factors such as nitrogen, phosphorous, temperature, light, micronutrients, pH and alkalinity, buoyancy, hydrologic and meteorological conditions, and the morphology of the impoundment have all been implicated in "bloom" formation (Carmichael, 1997; Chorus et al., 2000). According to the current taxonomy 150 genera with about 2000 species, at least 40 of which are known to be toxicogenic have been identified.
