Traffic noise may come from different sources (road, railway, air, navigation); traffic noise is one of the most important factors of environmental impacts and annoyances. According to European studies, 65 % of the European population is exposed to a higher noise level than the WHO recommendation level. To be exposed to a high noise level may cause several predictable and unpredictable human, environmental and social disturbances and changes. Traffic noise annoyance can be separated into objective and subjective components. The objective part is measurable with instruments quite easily but the subjective one inquires a complex study with many human factors. The term of subjective traffic noise annoyance is frequently used for describing human response to noise level but how can it be determined? This paper enumerates the traffic noise annoyance researches made during the last period with their results and conclusions and will give a short summary of further research possibilities.
