Gene-carrying nanoparticles were produced that displayed 50-fold higher in vitro transfection than DNA alone. The average transport rate of DNA-coated particles was 10- fold higher than similar size polystyrene particles, suggesting these novel gene carriers may overcome mucus barriers that limit gene delivery efficacy in the gastrointestinal tract.
