The development of coronary artery stents that deliver therapeutic agents directly to the location of denovo lesions marks a significant advance in the treatment of coronary artery disease. The site specific controlled delivery of paclitaxel from a vascular compatible polymer matrix has been found to be an effective treatment to reduce the incidence of neointimal hyperplasia and restenosis. The technology developed to design the TAXUS? Express2 Paclitaxel-Eluting Coronary Stent is summarized.
