Despite their numerous benefits such as high gloss, excellent substrate wetting and ease of application, conventional solvent-based alkyds are losing market to more VOC compliant polymers. More compliant water-reducible alkyds and alkyd emulsions have been introduced into the market to meet ever tightening VOC regulations; however limited hydrolysis resistance prevents their use in many applications where extended shelf life is required. This paper covers novel alkyd dispersions with excellent hydrolytic stability. The developed alkyd dispersions intended for original equipment and industrial maintenance markets show excellent retention of performance properties even after heat aging at elevated temperature for extended period of time at 1.9 lbs/gal and 1.6 lbs/gal VOC, respectively. The ability of this technology to achieve low VOCs with excellent hydrolytic stability opens the possibility to expand the use of water-borne alkyd into many applications where they have not been considered a viable alternative resin because of shelf-life limitations.
