This paper describes the results of CFD simulations of a single wall-fired unit to quantify the impacts of imbalances in burner air and coal flows on furnace operational conditions. These results are part of a Department of Energy (DOE) funded program to use modeling to quantify the impact of fuel and air imbalances in wall, tangential, and cyclone fired boilers. REI's three dimensional, multiphase, turbulent reacting flow code GLACIER is being utilized to perform the analyses. The single wall-fired unit has a capacity of 150 MW, is equipped with first generation low NOx burners and overfire air (OFA) and typically burns eastern bituminous coal. The parametric cases involve specified variations in coal, air, and combined air/coal flow rates as a function of burner location. Impacts of these variations on NOx, CO, gas temperature, and unburned carbon on fly ash are predicted. In addition, the results of the highly resolved three dimensional simulations also allow evaluation of the precise causes of these global impacts. A sensitivity analysis of the results of the wall-fired unit is also presented.
