BIAXIAL STRENGTH TEST OF DISCS OF DIFFERENT SIZE USING THE BALL ON THREE BALLS TEST

The ball on three balls (B3B) test is a simple and cheap method to evaluate the strength of brittle materials. At the Cocoa Beach conference of 2003 the relationship between the testing parameters and the stress distribution in the disc was presented. In this paper the B3B test is analysed in respect to measurement uncertainties. Then the test is used to evaluate the size effect on strength for two commercial ceramic materials (an alumina and a silicon nitride).
