VARIATION IN MERINO WOOL AND ITS APPLICABILITY TO SAMPLING AND OFDA2000 MEASUREMENT

Test results of wool staples sampled from the mid-side and tested on the OFDA2000 have similar levels of accuracy and precision to conventional mid-side testing (Behrendt et al. 2002). Wool taken from the pin-bone is also commonly tested due to ease of sampling. Whilst it is well known that wool from this site is broader than the mid-side, little is known about the variation between individual staples and, therefore, the reliability of OFDA2000 measurements from wool samples taken from the pin-bone.This study evaluated variation and precision of mean fibre diameter (MFD) measurements across the shoulder, mid-side and pin-bone sites within sheep.
