ANALYSIS OF GROWTH CONDITION OF WINTER WHEAT USING SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING DATA

Even for the area dominated with the single kind of crop, the growth condition, which might be comprised with the timing and the healthiness, would not be represented homogeneously. In order to analyze the growth condition of crop, the data with temporally high resolution could be suitable, but its coarse spatial resolution would become crucial constraint for the extraction of spatial pattern of variations. In this study, the author attempted to extract the information about the growth condition of winter wheat by using LANDSAT-TM/ETM+ and EO-1/Hyperion data. The study site was located in the northern part of Huang-Huai-Hai plain of China. Firstly, he examined the changes of indices of VSW and NDVI obtained from 8-day interval LANDSAT-TM and ETM+ data. Next, he examined the relation between the indices and the spectral characteristics obtained from Hyperion data. As a result, S component of VSW showed the increasing feature after flowering period of winter wheat more clearly compared with NDVI, and it could be used to estimate the relative timing of the growth from the single temporal data. This phenomenon should be associated with the change of color of leaves from green to yellow, which was verified by the examination of relation between S component of VSW and yellowish factor obtained from Hyperion data. He also compared the growth conditions between data in different years and could characterize the spatial pattern that the area of early or late harvesting tended to be fixed on the location.
